CLUB HISTORY

About Us
A Proud Heritage, A Vibrant Future
A Historic Union
On 1 April 1989, a pivotal chapter was written in South African-Italian history. It marked the unification of the Italian Bowling Club of Linbro Park and the Italian Sporting Club of Bedfordview (Olympia Football Club)—two pillars of the community—under one proud name: The Italian Club Johannesburg.
This merger symbolized far more than just a name change. It brought together a community once divided, affirming a renewed spirit of unity and cultural pride among generations of Italian South Africans.
Growth Through Community Spirit
In March 1992, with vision and unity, the Club’s Committee and its 1,400 Members rallied once again—this time to enhance and modernize their shared space. True to the Italian tradition of generosity and craftsmanship, the members personally contributed to fund a major upgrade of the facilities.
The renovations included:
-
A new conference hall for up to 150 guests
-
A revitalized Sala Verdi (main hall)
-
The addition of Il Terrazzo, an A La Carte restaurant
These additions transformed the Club into a versatile venue capable of hosting up to 700 patrons at a time. A grand Port Cochere entrance structure was later added, lending a stately welcome to all who visit.
A Living Legacy
Among the many milestones etched into the Club’s story, none stand taller than the visit from President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, then President of the Republic of Italy, in 2002—a testament to the Club’s cultural and social significance.
Today, the Italian Club Johannesburg is more than a gathering place for Italians. It’s a dynamic community hub welcoming people from all walks of life. Whether it’s through our:
-
Il Terrazzo Ristorante and SetteBello Restaurant
-
Coffee bar and outdoor terrace
-
Children’s birthday party venues
-
Conference and private function facilities
-
School partnerships and sports grounds
…we continue to grow while honouring our roots.
